En ole vähään aikaan ehtinyt kirjoitella tähän blogiin. Lokakuussa on ollut paljon kaikenlaista menoa koulun alkamisen ja asuntolaan muuttamisen takia, ja aikaa on siksi ollut vähän. Laitan tämän viikon päivänä X taas vähän stooria tänne, joten käykää kurkkaamassa myöhemmin.
I haven't had time to write this blog for the last few weeks. October has been really busy with school starting and me moving to the lodge of the school. This week on weekday X I will post some stuff here again, so be sure to check back later.

No niin, viikko pulkassa. Tänään (maanantaina) oli yksi kansallisista vapaapäivistä täällä, joten tuli pitkä viikonloppu. Viime viikolla alkoi koulu. Istuin arkipäivät akustiikan laboratoriossa ja lueskelin pohjustavaa materiaalia tutkimustani varten. Sovittiin professori Sagayaman kanssa, että alustava tutkimus aihe on "Audio Cover Song Identification" eli pitää luoda tietokoneohjelma, joka tunnistaa kaksi musiikki kappaletta samaksi vaikka sovitus, esittäjä ja tulkinta olisi molemmissa aivan eri. Hommaa varmasti riittää asian parissa, mutta vuosi on pitkä aika. On mahdollista, että myös puolalainen tohtoriopiskelija meidän laboratoriosta tekee kanssani yhteistyötä. Professori kertoi, että 8 tuntia on ok työmäärä päivässä. Moni opiskelijoista tekee enemmän, mutta jokainen saa päättää omasta tahdistaan suht vapaasti.
Well then, another week down in Japan and lots to go. Today (Monday) was a national holiday here so I had an extended weekend. My school started last week. I spent monday to friday at the laboratory of Acoustics and started reading through some of the material for my research. With professor Sagayama we decided on my research subject that it would be "Audio Cover Song Identification". So basically I'll have to construct a computer program that can figure out whether or not two songs are the same even if the arrangement, the artist and the approach is completely different. Creating a program like that takes a lot of work but I have one year. It's also possible that a Polish doctoral student of our lab is going to collaborate with me on the project. Professor Sagayama told me that 8 hours per day is ok. Many students do more than 8 hours but everybody is allowed fit their schedule as they please.
Ostin vuosikortin koulun urheilukeskukseen, jossa on punttisali, uimahalli, kiipeilyseinä ja vaikka mitä. Hinta yhdeltä vuodelta on 8000 jeniä eli ehkä 55 euroa, aika halpaa! Tilat ja laitteet ovat ihan ok kunnossakin, joten hyvä diili.
I bought a one year pass to the sports center of the University. It has a gym, a swimming pool, a bouldering wall among others. The price for one year is 8000 yen which is about 55 Euros, pretty cheap! The facilities and the machines of the gym are in ok condition so for this price it was a great bargain.
Täällä asuntolassa on aika ohuet seinät. Naapurihuoneessa on joku pariskunta Intiasta, joiden keskustelu kuuluu seinän läpi. Lisäksi ulkoa kantautuu välillä kaikennäköistä älämölöä, koska viereisessä rakennuksessa on vaihto-opiskelijoiden yhteinen kerho-/monitoimihuone. Ostin korvatulpat ja nukun sikeästi.
The walls here at the lodge are pretty thin. In the room next to me there's a couple from India and I can hear them talking through the wall. Also, sometimes there's some noise coming from outside because, the building next to this one is a kind of multipurpose hall for the exchange students. I bought ear plugs and I sleep like a baby.

Kämppä / The Crib
Sain eilen kämpän koulun asuntolasta. Asuntolasta on koulumatkaa vähän vajaa yhteen suuntaan. Lattiapinta-alaa on huimat 13 neliöä, mutta neliöt on käytetty tehokkaasti. Neliöihin sisältyy oma suihku, wc, jääkaappi ja liesi. Vuokra on kuussa 5900 jeniä ja siihen päälle tulee 2700 jeniä internetistä. Yhteensä siis hintaa tulee 8600 jeniä eli 57 euroa. Tokion hinnoilla kämppä on siis käytännössä ilmainen. Huoneen internetyhteys toimii 3. tai 4. lokakuuta lähtien.
I got the room at the university lodge yesterday. The commuting time from the lodge to my lab is a a few minutes short of an hour. The size is 13 square meters but they have been spent wisely. A private shower, toilet, refrigerator and a stove are included. The rent per month is 5900 yen + an extra 2700 yen for the internet connection. In total the price is 8600 yen which is 57 euros. Considering the cost of living around Tokyo, the room is practically free. The internet connection of the room will be available on the 3rd or the 4th of October.

Ensimmäinen yö oli aika mielenkiitoinen, koska huomasin nukkumaan mennessäni, että peittoa, tyynyä tai lakanoita ei ole. Askartelin sitten itselleni nämä vermeet vaatteista ja juuri ostamastani joogamatosta. Ja ettei kukaan huolestuisi turhaan, ostan puuttuvat tavarat tänään. Lupaan. :P
The first night got interesting as I noticed that there were no blankets, pillows or sheets provided. As a temporary solution I used my clothes and the newly bought yoga mat to fix this deficit. And for those of you that got worried, I'm going to buy the stuff today. Promise. :P

Kulkurielämää / The life of a gypsy
Sain viime viikolla tietää, että koulun asunnon saanti voi venyä hyvinkin lokakuun alkuun, koska virallinen avaimen luovutuspäivä on 2.10. Olenkin elänyt viimepäivät melkoista kulkurin elämää. 2 yöta suomesta tutun kaverini Munen luona, 2 yötä Nasu-vuorella, 1 yö hostellissa ja nyt olenkin asunut melkein viikon Munen kaverin, Ayakon luona. Päivisin olen tutustunut Tokioon ja tavannut kavereita. Kirjoitin tätä tekstiä mangakahvilassa. Minulla on täällä oma pehmustettu koppi, jossa voi surffata netissä, lukea sarjakuvia tai nukkua. Kopissa oli tyyny ja peittokin.
I heard last week that getting the room at the University dormitory might not be possible before October. The official date is the 2nd of October. My last week has been the life of a gypsy. I spent 2 nights at Mune`s place (Japanese friend I met in Finland), 2 nights at the mountain of Nasu, 1 night at a youth hostel and almost a week at Ayako`s place (friend of Mune). I wrote part of this text at a manga-cafe. The manga-cafes rent small rooms where you can surf the internet, read comics or sleep. A pillow and a blanket are included in the price.
En ole vielä saanut hankittua japanilaista kännykkää. Kännyn hommatakseen tarvitsee ensin rekisteröitymisen paikallisessa maistraatin tapaisessa. Täällä suurin osa puhelimista menee kytkykauppana vuoden sopimuksella.
I haven`t been able to get a Japanese cell phone yet. To get a phone you need to register first at the ward office. Over here most phones are sold together with the connection from the carrier. 12 months is the typical period.
Kävin sunnuntaina Kamakurassa Ekin ja Keikon kanssa (Japanilainen kaveri). Kamakura on Tokiosta vähän etelään. Kamakurassa on paljon temppeleita ja iso buddha-patsas. Illalla kävimme myös Enoshimassa, joka on mantereesta irrallaan oleva saari, jonne pääsee kuitenkin siltaa pitkin.
On Sunday I visited Kamakura with Eki and Keiko (a Japanese friend). Kamakura is a bit to the south from Tokyo. In Kamakura there are lots of temples, shrines and a big buddha-statue. In the evening we also went to Enoshima which is a a bridge-connected island not far from coast of Japan.
Olen syönyt täällä kaikkea mielenkiintoista. :-) Ruoka on pääosin aika tuttua, mutta japanilaiset haluavat joskus testata miten suhtautun johonkin paikalliseen erikoisuuten. Olen tähänasti herkutellut mm. heinäsirkoilla, kokonaisilla kalmareilla, mustekaloilla, lehmän sisäelimillä (en saanut selvää mikä osa), nattoolla (käyneitä soijapapuja), 1cm:n mittaisilla pikkukaloilla joiden nimi ei jäänyt mieleen. McDonaldsissakin olen tainut käydä 2 kertaa.
I`ve eaten all kind of interesting dishes here in Japan. :-) The food is mostly familiar, but sometimes the Japanese people want to test how I handle some local speciality. So far I`ve had the pleasure to eat e.g. grasshoppers, squid, octopus, internal organs of a cow (I couldn`t pick up which part of the cow I was having), natto (fermented soybeans), lots of 1 cm long fish (I can`t remember the name). I also went to McDonalds 2 times.
Muistan, kun itse tarjosin Suomessa muutamalle japanilaiselle mämmiä niin reaktio oli jotain tyyliin "onpas muuten hyvää tämä kerma ja sokeri tässä". :-)
I remember when I offer mämmi to a few japanese people. The reaction was something like "oh, I really like the cream and the sugar of this dish". :-)
