Kylmää on/It's cold

Noniin, eipäs ole vähään aikaan tullut kirjoiteltua tänne blogin puolelle. Koitan vähän taas aktivoitua.

Okay, I haven't been writing in this blog for a while. I'll try to pick up the pace again.

Täällä Tokiossa on ollut viime aikoina kylmä. No, suomalaisen mielestä +6 ja -2 välillä vaihteleva lämpötila ei kuulosta hirveän pahalta, mutta olen ollut huomaavinani, että paikallisten valitus viileähköstä säästä alkaa tarttua - ei liikaa onneksi kuitenkaan. Olen pelotellut japanilaisia suomalaisella -25 asteen pakkasella ja kertonut heille mm. että suomessa ulkogrillaaminenkin lopetellaan siinä vähän ensilumen jälkeen. Lämpö tuntuu muutenkin olevan tärkeä asia tässä maassa. Laboratoriohuoneessani istuvat kaverit haluavat pitää ilmastoinnin aina jossain +29 asteen tuntumassa. Uimahallin altaan vesi on ehkä 5 astetta lämpimämpää kuin suomalaisissa halleissa. Kun punttisalin suihkujen remontin takia suihkusta tuli vain kylmää vettä niin puolet japanilaista lopettivat punttisalilla käynnin remontin ajaksi. Itse jatkoin suunnilleen normaaliin malliin - mitä nyt muutama ruma sana pääsi suomeksi jääsuihkun koskettaessa selkääni.

Tokyo has been quite cold recently. Well, the average Finn thinks there's nothing special about +6 to -2 degrees centigrade, but I'm beginning to notice that the local people whining about the cool weather is starting affect my thinking as well - luckily not too much though. I've scared some Japanese people off by telling them about the Finnish -25 centigrade winter and told them e.g. that Finns stop having barbeque parties outside habit after the first snow of the winter has landed. Warmth seems to be important otherwise too in this country. The guys that sit with me in the same room in the lab would like to keep the air conditioning somewhere around 29 degrees. The water in the swimming pool of the schools sports center is 5 degrees warmer than in the pools I've tried in Finland. When the showers of the gym were renovated only cold water was available. Half of my Japanese friends stopped going to the gym until the renovation was complete because of the cold showers. I continued visiting the gym in a somewhat normal manner with the exception of some ominous Finnish curses escaping my lips when the icy water touched my back.

Japaniin matkustavilta vaaditaan sormenjäljet ja kasvokuva

Japanin rajatarkastukset muuttuvat. Kaikilta Japaniin saapuvilta ulkomaalaisilta otetaan sormenjäljet ja kasvokuva maahantulotarkastuksen yhteydessä 20. marraskuuta lähtien.

Finnairin matkustusasiakirjoista ja viranomaisasioista vastaava päällikkö Nina Kamsani arvelee, että biotunnisteiden kerääminen voi hidastaa maahantulotarkastuksia. Japaniin matkaavien kannattaa siis varautua jonoihin.

Sormenjäljet ja kasvokuvat kerätään kaikilta Japaniin saapuvilta ulkomaalaisilta. Jos matkailija ei suostu luovuttamaan sormenjälkiään ja kasvokuvaansa, häneltä evätään pääsy Japaniin.

Japan now requires all foreigners traveling to Japan to submit their finger prints and a portrait. The biometric check up is done at the airport starting from November 20th. 7 viikkoa nyt vietettynä Japanissa - fiilis hyvä!

7 weeks spent in Japan - feeling good!

Tällä viikolla olin käymässä Finland Cafessa. Paikka on Suomen matkailun edistämiskeskuksen (MEK) perustama kahvila tokiossa. Kahvila on auki joka vuosi kuukauden verran ja ilmeisesti paikka vaihtuu vuosittain. Kahvilassa oli tällä viikolla kahden suomalaisen vaatesuunnitelijan workshop-tilaisuus, jossa esiteltiin tietysti suomalaisia vaatteita - olin itse yksi malleista. Finland Cafen sivuilla oli vähän tekstiä ja kuvia tilaisuudesta, tässä linkki.

This week I visited a place called Finland Cafe. The place was founded in Tokyo by the Finnish Tourist Board. The Cafe is open every year for one month and the place seems to change every year. This week in the Cafe there was a workshop of two Finnish fashion designers, where Finnish clothes were presented - I was one of the models. On the Finland Cafe web page, there are some comments and pictures about it, here is the link.

Saliin oli tuotu paljon koivuja.

There were lots of birches in the room.

Sampsaa valmistellaan lavakuntoon. Vaatemalleja oli yhteensä kahdeksan, kuusi naista ja kaksi miestä.

Sampsa is being prepared for the stage. There were eight of the models, six women and two men.
Pukuhuoneessa jokaisen vaatteet oli merkitty erikseen.

In the changing room the clothes were given name tags.

Näytöksen jälkeen saimme suomalaista ruokaa ja juomaa.

En ole vähään aikaan ehtinyt kirjoitella tähän blogiin. Lokakuussa on ollut paljon kaikenlaista menoa koulun alkamisen ja asuntolaan muuttamisen takia, ja aikaa on siksi ollut vähän. Laitan tämän viikon päivänä X taas vähän stooria tänne, joten käykää kurkkaamassa myöhemmin.

I haven't had time to write this blog for the last few weeks. October has been really busy with school starting and me moving to the lodge of the school. This week on weekday X I will post some stuff here again, so be sure to check back later.

No niin, viikko pulkassa. Tänään (maanantaina) oli yksi kansallisista vapaapäivistä täällä, joten tuli pitkä viikonloppu. Viime viikolla alkoi koulu. Istuin arkipäivät akustiikan laboratoriossa ja lueskelin pohjustavaa materiaalia tutkimustani varten. Sovittiin professori Sagayaman kanssa, että alustava tutkimus aihe on "Audio Cover Song Identification" eli pitää luoda tietokoneohjelma, joka tunnistaa kaksi musiikki kappaletta samaksi vaikka sovitus, esittäjä ja tulkinta olisi molemmissa aivan eri. Hommaa varmasti riittää asian parissa, mutta vuosi on pitkä aika. On mahdollista, että myös puolalainen tohtoriopiskelija meidän laboratoriosta tekee kanssani yhteistyötä. Professori kertoi, että 8 tuntia on ok työmäärä päivässä. Moni opiskelijoista tekee enemmän, mutta jokainen saa päättää omasta tahdistaan suht vapaasti.

Well then, another week down in Japan and lots to go. Today (Monday) was a national holiday here so I had an extended weekend. My school started last week. I spent monday to friday at the laboratory of Acoustics and started reading through some of the material for my research. With professor Sagayama we decided on my research subject that it would be "Audio Cover Song Identification". So basically I'll have to construct a computer program that can figure out whether or not two songs are the same even if the arrangement, the artist and the approach is completely different. Creating a program like that takes a lot of work but I have one year. It's also possible that a Polish doctoral student of our lab is going to collaborate with me on the project. Professor Sagayama told me that 8 hours per day is ok. Many students do more than 8 hours but everybody is allowed fit their schedule as they please.

Ostin vuosikortin koulun urheilukeskukseen, jossa on punttisali, uimahalli, kiipeilyseinä ja vaikka mitä. Hinta yhdeltä vuodelta on 8000 jeniä eli ehkä 55 euroa, aika halpaa! Tilat ja laitteet ovat ihan ok kunnossakin, joten hyvä diili.

I bought a one year pass to the sports center of the University. It has a gym, a swimming pool, a bouldering wall among others. The price for one year is 8000 yen which is about 55 Euros, pretty cheap! The facilities and the machines of the gym are in ok condition so for this price it was a great bargain.

Täällä asuntolassa on aika ohuet seinät. Naapurihuoneessa on joku pariskunta Intiasta, joiden keskustelu kuuluu seinän läpi. Lisäksi ulkoa kantautuu välillä kaikennäköistä älämölöä, koska viereisessä rakennuksessa on vaihto-opiskelijoiden yhteinen kerho-/monitoimihuone. Ostin korvatulpat ja nukun sikeästi.

The walls here at the lodge are pretty thin. In the room next to me there's a couple from India and I can hear them talking through the wall. Also, sometimes there's some noise coming from outside because, the building next to this one is a kind of multipurpose hall for the exchange students. I bought ear plugs and I sleep like a baby.
